Hey Scotch boys! Thanks for inviting me to talk with you about crime writing as part of your literature festival… I’ll be talking to you about how the media can impact on crime and vice versa. I’ll be using real life case studies to demonstrate how the media can both be helpful for fighting crime and a hindrance… I’ll also talk about how the media has been a vehicle for change over the past 2 decades, particularly in relation to child abuse and more recently alcohol related violence on the streets. I’ll combine all of this into a demonstration on how I use real life influences to write my thriller novels… I think you’ll find it a very interesting and engaging talk, so come along and enjoy!

The media have no place in crime. It’s all well and good to report a successful police raid, but a renegade newspaper, on the day of the recent anti-terrorist raid that foiled a plot to kill soldiers in a Sydney military base, published the story before the raids were finished! It’s not worth jeopardising national security just to be the first to a story. Step back and let the police do their job.

Well said Sam, however there is a place for the media as a tool in catching offenders. Sometimes the media can be very useful for a number of other reasons also, such as promoting the work of a particular organisation and therefore increasing the likelihood of funding improvements, however there is always a risk that these objectives and those of the media can jeopardise actual police work!
The issue I think you’re hinting at, which I agree with, is that criminal investigation should always take priority over simply printing “news”… See you guys on the 14th!
