Scotch Literature Festival 2005  >  Roland Harvey

Roland Harvey
roland harvey Roland Harvey
Roland Harvey was born in Kew in 1945. Roland studied Architecture and moved to illustrating and publishing in 1978, establishing The Five Mile Press and Roland Harvey Studios.
Using black humour and subversive wit, Roland has brought his subjects to life in books such as My Place in Space, The First Fleet, and Sick As: bloody moments in the history of medicine. The Story of the brain is in production.
He has produced a 12 metre frieze of the history of the world, stamps for the Bicentenniel, and the first modern-day Australian Christmas cards. He is currently working on projects including the story of Ned Kelly.

The Art of the Unexpected: Illustration as more than Decoration (Yr 9 workshop)
My theory is: If I can't understand it, I can't draw it. So I link drawing to comprehension.
I will discuss my approach to writing and illustrating; the ethics and challenges.
I look at the illustrator's role as observer, and techniques and tricks useful in getting the result. I will show a few of my favourite methods of explaining and illuminating sometimes difficult subjects.
