Valanga Khoza

VALANGA KHOZA was born in South Africa and spent his youth in Alexandra, a black township of Johannesburg. He grew up in a community where many could neither read nor write, however music, dance and storytelling were an integral part of the culture. A musician since youth, Valanga since settling in Australia has devoted himself entirely to performing. Solo engagements include supporting Kanda Bongo Man, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Geoffrey Oryema.

Freedom and Apartheid (Yrs 8, 9 workshops)
Interweaving contemporary African music in his talk, Valanga recounts his childhood in South Africa and the events that led to his exile in 1976 as a member of the South African Students organization. Having revisited South Africa on many occasions since 1992 he is able to give a broad insight into the current situation.
