The Piano Tuner
By Justine Larbalestier
A tightly composed narrative that follows the adventures of a London piano tuner, who is happy with the natural rhythms of his life and marriage, and completely unexpectedly summoned to the War Office and asked to travel to eastern Burma. He must repair a rare piano for a mysterious army surgeon, whose work for Her Majesty’s military service must be supported at any cost.
This is a beautiful story that explores the tapestries of London in the 19th century, and fantastic far-off cities and lands completely removed from Edgar Drake’s experience. Hints of Coppola’s Apocalypse Now and Conrad’s Heart of Darkness.
