1. FindIt @ Scotch
In this tutorial students will discover the ease with which they can search our catalogue and ALL our online databases simultaneously.
The only password needed is their student number whether using FindIt from home or school.
This tutorial is an ideal introduction to "federated searching", which is now commonplace in all tertiary institutions.
2. Bibliographies
Students will learn to and practice the art of dissecting a hardcopy or online resource. They will be able to confidently pick out the required information from a hardcopy book, a catalogue record, a journal article or a website to correctly cite resources within the body of their assignments or in a bibliography.
3. Evaluating Websites
In this tutorial, students will discover the ways they can identify authoritative sites and spot bogus ones. Your students will learn how to determine the legitimacy of information they discover in Cyberspace.
4. From the Catalogue to the Shelf
We all assume that our students understand the Dewey Decimal System and are skilled enough to locate books on the library shelves. Unfortunately this is not always the case. Bring your students to the library for a refresher course on the basics.
In the "From the Catalogue to the Shelf" tutorial students will:
1. Locate a specific book using the library catalogue
2. Identify the call number of the book
3. Locate and retrieve the book from the library shelf
5. Hands- on Blogging
The library's new blog, The Portal, is about books, reading, writing and all things literary. In this tutorial students will explore the blog and learn how to post comments. Interested students may also be signed up as 'contributors' so they can publish their own writing or begin new discussions.
