Facilities and Services

Email Print PDF

The Library and Information Centre provides curriculum based resources, literature and recreational materials in a variety of formats which support the changing needs of the Scotch community. Students and staff have access to an extensive fiction collection with emphasis on Australian adolescent fiction. Non-fiction and reference materials are in both print and electronic formats. There is also a large periodical collection covering a wide range of academic and general interests.

Physical facilities
The Library and Information Centre is housed in the Lithgow Centre. The central, southern and northern sections of the library cater for students working within their class or undertaking individual research. This is the hub of the library, with much busy activity. There is also a 'Reading and Discussion Room' which has a flexible layout. This space is used by reading groups, 'Literature Circles' and lunchtime activities. The other room, 'Classroom North' is a teaching space with 26 computers and an instructional area. Both classrooms have digital projection facilities. There is also a lounge area for recreational reading.

Technology
A full range of technology is available for research and recreation. There are over fifty computers are available for student use. Students can also connect to the school network on their own computers via wireless access. There is an extensive range of electronic resources including the most recent encyclopaedias, newspapers, reference materials and on-line full-text databases. Multimedia resources are also available with students having access to a production room and multimedia studio. Both black and white and colour photocopying is available via the student swipe card with a value-adding function.

Media Services
The media team manages the Clickview system which includes 24/7 recording of ABC1 and SBS1, and recording between 6pm and 2am of channels 7, 9, and 10. On request they will upload any program from these time periods to the Scotch ClickView server. If a program is required from outside these hours or from ABC2, SBS2 or Foxtel it is necessary to email your requests to the library media team at least 24 hours before the program is shown on TV. In addition, we can source programs which other schools have loaded onto Clickview Exchange, or source commercial dvds if needs are not met by the current library collection.
A select number of previously recorded DVDs and videos may also be loaded onto Clickview on request.
Please note, due to copyright restrictions commercial [ie. purchased] DVDs and videos cannot be loaded onto Clickview.

Education

The Library and Information Centre is involved in the process of change and curriculum development that is occurring in the wider education community. The library staff assist students to become independent researchers and to construct their own learning. User education is a significant part of our program, whether it be guiding students through a new electronic database, conducting classes and tutorials on research skills or organising professional development for teachers.

Literature
The Library actively promotes reading and literature through "Reading for Pleasure" classes for students in years 7 - 10.  There are Literature Clubs, Literature Circles, and Reading Matters programs. Authors and illustrators are also regular visitors. A whole school week-long Literature Festival takes place in alternate years.

Library Officers
Each year a small group of students in year nine and above can train to become Library Officers. Tasks undertaken include working on the Service Desk, tidying the library, re-shelving items, assisting with special events and supporting the customer service ethos of the library.

User Services
To facilitate the process of independent learning, the library staff "help the students to help themselves". Readers' advisers are available all day to assist students with their enquiries. Staff guide the students in planning their research tasks and help them select appropriate information from both print and electronic sources. This reinforces information literacy skills which the teacher-librarians are promoting in classes. User Guides, bibliographies and fiction lists are continually available. Students are encouraged to make use of the Suggestion Book or use our Online Suggestions.

Borrowing
Most books are available for 4 week loans and are renewable. Ten items may be borrowed at any one time. Year 12 have unlimited loans available to them. Videos and DVDs may be borrowed overnight or over the weekend. Magazines and newspapers are for use in the library only.

Lunchtime Activities
Each day of the week we offer different activities to the boys at lunch times:
Every day - Reading, Researching and Socialising
Tuesday - Tuesday Book Club
Wednesday - Wii competitions
Thursday - Drawing Club
Friday - Literature Club
Competitions and quizzes are also an integral part of the recreational offerings from the library.

Displays
There are continuously changing displays featuring photo galleries, author information, coming events, special themes and student work.

Overdue or lost items
Students are informed when they have an item overdue. They will not be permitted to borrow if there is an item outstanding. Lost items should be reported as quickly as possible, so the student can resume borrowing rights. After a reasonable time lost books will be charged to school accounts. Refunds are issued if the item is found.
