Literature Circles for Students

Literature Circles - Year 8 English classes working with Teacher-Librarians

All Year 8 English students will participate in at least one term of Literature Circles during the course of the year.


  • To employ cooperation and compromise in group text selection
  • To undertake the responsibility of completing prescribed reading as decided by the group
  • To improve communication skills through participation in small group discussion
  • To practise active listening skills
  • To build stronger reader/text relationships


  • Small groups of 4 students are formed according to reading ability
  • Groups choose the text they will read
  • Different groups read different texts
  • Groups set their own reading schedule so as to complete text in allocated time
  • Individuals maintain a reading reflection¬†journal
  • Groups discuss their reading on a regular basis
  • Groups report back to the rest of the class about what they've read


  • Increased student ownership of reading experience
  • In-depth analysis of selected text
  • Reading recommendations made to class
  • Generic skills incorporated

Book Chat for Parents - run by the Library Auxiliary

Come and join a group of parents and a couple of librarians for an informal discussion about books we have enjoyed, plus find out what the Scotch boys are borrowing and studying.
