Scotch Literature Festival 2005 > Elizabeth Finkel Stem cells (Yr 12 masterclass)
It's not often that the public gets to have a say in the direction that science will go.
But in August of 2002, as Australia's politicians debated the embryo research and
cloning bills, it was very much up to the public to decide on whether the research
should go ahead. What started off as a sophisticated debate descended into confusion
and deliberate distortion by those who opposed the research. These distortions,
and the public's difficulties in understanding the scientific and ethical issues were
the trigger that compelled Elizabeth Finkel to write her book.
